Teaching innovation
"I teach Behavioural Medicine to Family Medicine (FM) residents. During their orientation lectures, I divide the residents into groups of 4 - and ask each group to research basic information about Behavioural Medicine 

i) define Behavioural Medicine in the FM context

ii) what are some of the outcomes associated with the practice of Behavioural Med in FM, etc.. 

They have 15 minutes - and then they e-mail me 'point form' summaries of their findings that I work into my PowerPoint. They certainly seem more engaged doing this than when I lecture to them about the same topics."

Anchoring Technique
"At the end of a skill based teaching session, I will ask the residents:

 i) if they can identify one skill that they want to work on in their clinics during the next week 

ii) how they will know whether they have been success (measurable)? 

I will then follow up with the residents in one week and ask them:

 i) whether they were successful

ii) was it a useful skill? 

If they had problems with the skill, I will ask them to reflect/coach them on how they might try a differently approach. I follow up with the resident the next week to debrief."

To write objectives or to not write objectives, that is the question
"Instructional objectives:  outline the purpose and value of what you are teaching. Think of Goals and Objectives as a Puzzle!

Goals build the puzzle.  

Objectives are the pieces of the puzzle.  

The end result is the picture on the puzzle box.

Objectives can be time consuming to write but do provide some accountability as well as direction for learning & teaching. Objectives should be specific enough to provide focus, but general enough so that they do not limit flexibility in teaching or learning methods and materials."

Why use questioning as a teaching tool?
"The consequence of a good question is that it generates a silence filled with thought which leads to talk! 

For the instructor, it helps to establish prior knowledge of the student, promotes discussion, checks that learning has occurred and can help manage inappropriate behaviour during the session. For the student, questioning helps frame learning in the bigger picture, breaks the monotony of a lecture, increases motivation & confidence via active participation, stimulates interest and allows application of and integration with previous learning."
